Director’s Statement
Birds of Paradise is a deeply personal exploration of the emotional tides experienced by individuals caught in cycles of unhealthy relationships and economic struggle. Using the vivid oceanic imagery of Oahu, the film balances raw, intimate storytelling with a visually striking narrative, capturing the contrasts between inner turmoil and fleeting moments of peace. It also subtly reflects the negative effects of tourism on the island, showcasing its impact on local culture and the environment.
The project was brought to life by a diverse cast and crew, whose unique perspectives enriched the storytelling process. Together, we sought to create a film that authentically represents the complexity of gender, class, and identity, as well as the power of resilience and transformation.
